the Carpenters Square

Our Instructors

The Carpenter's Square is quite proud of their group of instructors that are, in their view, second to none. They have been hand picked by Rob McFarlane, the owner, for not only their impressive level of skills in their respective fields, but their ability to interact with their students.

Rob McFarlane, Proprietor
Build an Entertainment Unit

Rob McFarlaneYour instructor for the Entertainment Unit course is Rob McFarlane, the owner of the Carpenter's Square. Rob has been plying his skills as a cabinet maker for over 30 years. Rob has thoroughly enjoyed teaching, men and women alike, the woodworking skills necessary to build these individually designed cabinets for over 15 years now.

Rob says "I especially enjoy the look of gratification on the faces of my students as the cabinets start coming together. Once the initial sense of apprehensiveness wains away and their level of confidence rises, they can't wait for course night to get back at it again."

So if you're looking for a challenge and want to join in the course, call Rob to register.

Rob Smit
Furniture and Cabinet Making

Rob Smit Robert Smit R.P.T., emigrated to Canada from the Netherlands, and as a result of his early tutelage at the hands of his father (a respected church organist, vocational teacher, and piano technician) completed his studies and formal training in Ottawa, and joined the Piano Technicians Guild as a registered craftsman member. He has since served as a director on the executive board of that guild.

As an organ builder and master cabinet maker, Robert founded his own organ and piano company in 1978, which served a wide range of churches and institutional customers in Eastern Ontario. Proficient in the field of Computer Aided design, Robert designs and builds many of his own cabinet consoles and associated equipment. He has over twenty five years of experience in this highly specialized field and for the last 12 years he spends three hours every week teaching a small group of individuals cabinet making at the Carpenter's Square. We are especially pleased to have Rob as a teacher at our shop. He makes learning the necessary woodworking skills in his course not only informative but certainly fun.

Harold Veenstra
Intro to Woodworking

Harold VeenstraOver the years woodworking has been a major interest for our intro to woodworking teacher, Harold Veenstra. Even during his 16 years in the military as a police officer you could always find Harold in his free time at the base woodworking, shop designing and building fine pieces of furniture for his friends & family.

Once retired from the military, Harold persued his love of woodworking by starting his own company, “ACM Durham Cabinetry Ltd”.

While building his company Harold returned to school, at Humber College’s Cabinetry Course and graduated in 2008 with Honours.

Harold is truly a people person and past students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the course with Harold.

During the course Harold emphasizes not only safety, but encourages questions in all areas of woodworking. He’s a real hands on teacher.

We’re certainly glad to have Harold as our Intro to Woodworking teacher at the Carpenter’s Square.
